BHPK leaders represents UMC in a summer exposure at Mangyan Day

Manyan Day is a 3 day festival held last April 10 – 12, 2014 in Victoria, Oriental Mindoro celebrating the culture, unity and rights of the Mangyan people organized by the United Church of Christ in the Philippines – IDPIP, Mindoro and Romblon ecumenical group and KALIKHa is attended by Rev. Marven Chavarria (Kalayaan UMC) and Rev. Mervin Anthony Montano (Atimonan UMC-Fuji/Dalahican) of the Bayan ni Hesus – Pamayanang Katutubo represents the United Methodist Church as exposurist under the National Council of Churches in the Philippines.

The festival attended by almost 1000 Mangyans aims to unite the five tribes of the Mangyan people to strengthen their community of the culture and their rights. activities includes community worship held by different religious leaders including Catholic priest and nuns, free medical services, group discussions on pertinent issues especially affecting their ancestral lands. Related to the issue of ancestral lands was due to illegal entry of mining which though claimed as will benefit the region but exploits the land and the whole environment. This issue of mining was featured in a TV program by a major television network in the Philippines.

There were also activities for children facilitated by EdiCUTE and with the help of workers union of the University of the Philippines. There were games, time for coloring and teaching songs. Rights of children were also discussed among the Mangyan people.

Pastors Chavarria and Montano along with religious leaders supports the Mangyan people asserting their rights and self determination including its rejection of mining in the province. This is in preservation of the Mangyan community as believed as the will of God for the Mangyan community to experience his grace, justice and peace on their community as manifestation of the reign of Christ.
